Blog 2: Is Pop Music a Art Form or Commodity

Pop is short for popular and the reason why its popular is because there are a lot of people who demand and consume pop music. Music from all different genres can be pop music. All the artist need to do is make a song that is current and meets all the generic conventions of the genre that it originally comes from. An example of this is artist like Chris Brown, he comes from the R n B genre but he makes songs that are popular which gets his record into the charts, this makes it a pop song. Artists do this to generate revenue so this may be why it’s called a commodity instead of an art form. Just because an a genre generate revenue and popularity it doesn’t take away from the fact that it started as an art form that was made popular.

  1. You have defined pop (after a fashion) but without a working definition of art then the question can only ever really be half answered.
